His pioneering work on ‘microexpressions’, the telltale non-verbal clues we all give when we lie, has been adopted by law-enforcement agencies across the globe. In 2001, Dr Ekman collaborated with John Cleese for the BBC documentary series The Human Face. And Tim Roth’s character, Cal Lightman, in the hit crime drama Lie to Me, is based on Dr Ekman and his work. He retired in 2004 as professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and from 1960 to 2004 he worked at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute.
